Privacy Policy

At Kuuli, your privacy matters to us. This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, how and why we use it, who we share it with, and the choices and rights you have. Kuuli is a compatibility-first dating service that combines astrological birth charts, an AI matchmaker conversation, and a lifestyle questionnaire to help you meet people you're genuinely compatible with. Because of this, some of the information we process is sensitive, and we handle it with care.

By using Kuuli, you agree to the practices described in this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.

Information we collect

Account information

When you create an account, we collect information such as your name, email address, password (stored in a hashed form), and, where you enable it, two-factor authentication settings.

Profile and birth data

To build your natal chart and matchmaking profile, we collect your date of birth, birth time (where known), birth location, gender, and preferences. Where you choose not to provide an exact birth time, we generate an approximate chart. This astrological and demographic information is central to how Kuuli works.

Profile photos and voice answers

You may upload profile photos and record short voice answers. These are shown to other members as part of your profile.

Matchmaker and questionnaire responses

We collect the answers you provide during the AI matchmaker conversation and the lifestyle questionnaire. These are used to compute compatibility and are not shown to other members as raw answers.

Verification information

If you choose to verify your account, we process a selfie video for a liveness and face-match check (see “Biometric information” below) and, for identity verification, government-issued ID information through our verification providers.

Biometric information

Photo verification is optional. If you choose it, we scan the selfie video you record as biometric data: we detect a live human face and compare it to your primary profile photo. This means we process a biometric identifier / facial geometry solely to confirm that a real, live person matches your profile.

Messages and interactions

We process the messages you exchange with matches, the signals you send, and outcomes you report (such as whether you went on a date), which help improve your future matches.

Payment information

When you subscribe to a paid tier, payment is processed by our payment providers (such as Stripe or, on mobile, the app store's in-app purchase system). We do not store full card numbers ourselves; we receive limited billing and subscription status information.

Device and usage information

We automatically collect certain technical information such as your IP address, device type, browser, approximate location, and how you interact with the service, through cookies and similar technologies described in our Cookie Policy.

Biometric data (photo verification)

Photo verification is an optional feature. When you use it, KUULI processes your selfie as biometric data, and we ask for your explicit consent before the selfie step. This section explains what we capture, why, and how long we keep it.

What we capture: a short selfie video you record on your device. We extract still frames from it and analyze facial geometry to (1) confirm a live person (liveness) and (2) compare your face to your primary profile photo (face-match).
Why: solely to confirm that a real, live person matches your profile photo, so that the “Photo verified” badge is trustworthy. We do not use this biometric data for advertising, tracking, or to identify you outside of photo verification, and we do not sell or share it.
Who processes it: the biometric analysis (face detection and comparison) is performed by Amazon Web Services (AWS Rekognition) acting as our processor. We do not create or store a reusable face template, and we do not enroll your face in any searchable database.
Consent: we obtain your explicit opt-in consent before capturing or scanning your selfie. Photo verification is entirely optional — you can use KUULI without it.
Retention and destruction: the extracted frames and the face-comparison are processed only in memory for the check and discarded immediately afterward. The raw selfie video is permanently destroyed within 24 hours of the check. We retain only a non-biometric record of the verification outcome (pass or fail) and your consent, for security and compliance.

How we use your information

To generate your natal chart and compute compatibility and synastry between members.
To power the AI matchmaker conversation and surface people you may click with.
To operate messaging, signals, and match-outcome features.
To process subscriptions, payments, and billing communications.
To verify identity and detect and prevent fraud, abuse, and violations of our guidelines.
To send you service, security, and (where you've opted in) marketing or reminder communications.
To improve, personalize, and secure our services and to comply with legal obligations.

How we share your information

We share information with other members only as needed to operate the service (for example, your profile, photos, voice answers, and shared compatibility themes — never your raw questionnaire answers). We also share information with service providers who work on our behalf, such as hosting, analytics, payment, email, and verification providers, under contracts that limit how they may use it. We may disclose information where required by law, to protect the safety and rights of our members and the public, or in connection with a business transfer. We do not sell your personal information in the traditional sense.

Data retention

We keep your personal information for as long as your account is active and as needed to provide the service. When you delete your account, we delete or de-identify your personal information within a reasonable period, except where we must retain certain data to comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, prevent fraud, or enforce our agreements. Some verification and safety records may be retained for a limited period for security and compliance purposes.

Your rights and choices

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal information, to object to or restrict certain processing, and to withdraw consent. You can manage much of your information directly in the app, including your profile, notification preferences, and account deletion. To exercise other rights, contact us using the details below. Because KUULI uses no non-essential cookies or tracking, we do not currently provide a consent-management tool and do not process Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals — there is no optional tracking to opt out of.

Security

We use technical and organizational measures designed to protect your information, including encryption in transit, hashed passwords, session management, and access controls. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Children

Kuuli is only for adults. You must be at least 18 years old to use the service. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18, and we will delete such information if we become aware of it.

International transfers

We may process and store your information in countries other than where you live. Where we transfer information internationally, we take steps to ensure it receives an appropriate level of protection.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will take reasonable steps to notify you, such as by posting the updated policy with a new effective date.
